Growing up, I took dance lessons. Besides having a ton of fun, I was also super flexible. Part of my nightly routine was to stretch for about 20 minutes before bed.
Fast forward 10 years, and I’m probably still more flexible than the average person, but my body (especially my hips) is tense, all the time. Some of this is due to bad genes, some of it is due to running, and some of it is due to under-use. I haven’t stretched before bed since I was in high school. Every now and then I’ll take a yoga class, but it’s not enough.
Dora, however, practices every day.
Anyway, a couple weeks ago I hurt my back when I was running. Since back problems run in my family, I figured it would be a good time to not only visit a chiropractor, but also reintroduce bedtime stretching into my life. And honestly, I feel so much better. Not only are my hips and back less tense, but I really look forward to spending a few minutes of each day dedicated to unwinding.
Thanks to YouTube, there are about a million stretch/yoga routines online, but here’s the one I’ve been using, if you’re interested.
